Ecstasy Addiction

Ecstasy Abuse

Abuse of MDMA, commonly referred to as ecstasy, first became common in the “rave” and all-night party scene. Ecstasy has gained a deceptive reputation as a “safe” drug, which perhaps explains its rapid rise in popularity and, consequently, increased abuse. Ecstasy has now spread to a wide range of settings and demographic subgroups.

Myths abound about both the acute effects and long-term consequences of ecstasy abuse, but one fact is clear: ecstasy is far from benign. For example, ecstasy can cause a dangerous increase in body temperature that can lead to cardiovascular failure. Ecstasy abuse can also increase heart rate, blood pressure, and heart wall stress. Symptoms of ecstasy overdose include high blood pressure, faintness, panic attacks, and in severe cases, a loss of consciousness, and seizures. A number of studies show that long-term, heavy ecstasy abuse results in cognitive deficits, including problems with memory.

Does Ecstasy Abuse Lead to Ecstasy Addiction?

Ecstasy abuse can lead to tolerance, dependence and ecstasy addiction. A survey of young adult and adolescents found that 43 percent of those who reported a history of ecstasy abuse met the accepted criteria for dependence, as evidenced by continued ecstasy use despite physical or psychological harm, withdrawal effects, and tolerance. Almost 60 percent of people who abuse ecstasy report withdrawal symptoms, including fatigue, loss of appetite, depressed feelings, and trouble concentrating.

Evaluating Ecstasy Abuse Treatment Centers

Any rehab center that boasts first-rate ecstasy abuse treatment should be entirely able – and willing — to supply answers to any and all of your questions. Do not be timid in asking, and be sure that you are comfortable with the answers.

First, determine the accreditation of the ecstasy abuse treatment center you are considering. Remarkably, there are some rehabs that have no accreditation, often because their ecstasy addiction treatment methods are questionable. Some of the more dubious California rehab centers even state that there is a “simple answer” to ecstasy abuse or addiction, and that dealing with emotional, relationship and family issues is not necessary. Be aware that this approach is short-sighted, counter-productive, and entirely inaccurate.

Other questions that are important to ask when considering ecstasy abuse treatment: If you are currently seeing a therapist for ecstasy abuse or addiction, what is his or her opinion? Does the ecstasy abuse treatment center address dual diagnosis needs? What is its drug treatment philosophy? Is the cost of residential treatment “all inclusive”? Is medical insurance accepted?

At Renaissance Malibu, we have the right answers. We have a documented, long-standing history of success in ecstasy abuse treatment and will proudly share with you our innovative programs, our philosophy, our accreditation, and our experienced staff’s impeccable credentials.
